Do I need an FTP (Functional Threshold Power) assessment?
Yes. The FTP (Functional Threshold Power) is an estimation of the workload a cyclist can sustain for an hour without a drastic increase in metabolite wastes (build-up of lactic acid).
An FTP assessment provides your precise training zone, so your workouts can be personally tailored and you always get maximum value from your time in the saddle.
Technically, FTP is the greatest mean maximum power you can currently produce for one hour on your bike. It’s without doubt the most important power metric.
Why is training to my FTP important?
Most of us tend to attack our cycling with a mix of under- and over-training. VBike’s approach helps you avoid this so you get more out of your time in the saddle.
FTP provides you with a precise training zone and also provides a marker for how your training is progressing.
How is FTP assessment done?
We test with a 20-minute controlled effort.
To do this we set your bike up on a special trainer in our studio and get you to ride for 20 minutes at your maximum effort. We then take your data and subtract 5% to determine what your output would be over 60 minutes – and this becomes your FTP.
You don’t need to train for your FTP test.
How often do I need FTP assessment done?
Your FTP test is a key metric in tracking your cycling progress, ensuring your workouts are tailored to your current fitness level.
At VBike, we recommend taking an FTP test every 6-8 weeks to accurately measure improvements in power, endurance, and efficiency.
Regular testing helps fine-tune your training zones, preventing plateaus and maximising your performance gains.
