The festive season is here — sunshine, BBQs, family time, and yes, the temptation to let your training slide. For cyclists, Christmas and summer break can either be a well-earned reset or a slippery slope toward losing hard-earned fitness. But here’s the good news: with a bit of planning, you can keep your riding consistent, stay motivated, and enjoy the break without guilt.
Here’s how to stay in the saddle (and love it) these holidays.
Plan & Lock in Your Rides Early
Between social gatherings, shopping runs, and summer holidays, your calendar can fill up fast. If you don’t plan your rides, they’ll be the first to go. Look at your week in advance and schedule your rides like appointments. Check VBike's booking schedule and secure days you want to come in.
Train with Friends or Meet VBike's Members & Train Together
Motivation thrives in a group. Whether it’s with a group of mates or joining a class at our Indoor Cycling Studio, riding with others brings accountability and fun.
Train Smart
Pressed for time? Quality over quantity is the name of the game. Focus on short sessions to maintain fitness without eating up hours of your day. A 45-minute session tailored to your fitness level can be just as effective as a longer endurance ride — especially during the festive chaos.
Indoor sessions like those we hold at VBike's are a great fallback when the time is tight and when you're looking for structure without the solo grind.
Set a Mini Goal
Without structure, your riding can drift. Use the holiday break to chase a mini goal — it could be hitting a certain distance, improving your personal best or signing up to a mini challenge, it can add that little bit of the motivation you need. These goals also give your rides purpose and keep you engaged. Better yet, share your challenge on social — it’ll keep you accountable and might just inspire a few mates too.
Balance It Out
Let’s be real — holidays are about more than watts and w/kg. Enjoy the pavlova, the beers, the sleep-ins. Just don’t let one day off become a week off. The goal isn’t perfection — it’s momentum.
If you miss a ride, don’t stress. Move your body however you can: go for a swim, walk with family, or sneak in a 20-minute spin. It all counts.
